What Happens Next?

Canada has long been a supporter of Israel and its right to exist as a Jewish homeland. This month, the Canadian government issued visas to Israeli citizens in an effort to improve diplomatic relations with their neighbour. The move comes after months of tension between the two nations, including a spat over Canada’s decision to boycott Israel’s participation in the United Nations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the visa decision, saying it would “improve ties with one of the most important democracies in the world.” He added that he hoped the move would lead to increased trade and cooperation between the two countries. However, some Canadians are concerned about the impact of this conflict on humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, an extremist group considered by many to be a terrorist organisation.

The visa issue is just one part of a larger dispute between Canada and Israel. In late March, Trudeau announced that Canada would boycott Israeli products produced in West Bank settlements – a move that angered Netanyahu. Trudeau defended his decision, saying that it was “an investment in peace” and called on other countries to do the same.
